Booking Through Thursday 9

Booking Through Thursday is a weekly meme which asks a bookish question which you have to answer.

This weeks question is:

Do you multi-task when you read? Do other things like stirring things on the stove, brushing your teeth, watching television, knitting, walking, et cetera?

Or is it just me, and you sit and do nothing but focus on what you’re reading?

(Or, if you do both, why, when, and which do you prefer?)

Usually I am one task kinda girl. If I'm reading then that's all I'm doing. But I can muti-task if I have to. I can watch the TV and read at the same time, it just depends on the book and the show.
I have been known to occasionally eat and read at the same time but my parents drummed that out of me pretty good when I was a kid. According to my mother the dining table is not the place to read and even though I'm not a kid anymore it's hard to break my mum's rules.
I am notoriously clumsy and have on several occasions tried to walk and read at the same time and found that it was the best way to injure myself, so I gave that up.
But no matter what I'm doing after a little while I always seem to abandon the other tasks anyway and fully concentrate on reading - it's just the way I am.

That's all for now.

  1. I can't multi-task when I'm reading. I can watch TV and be on the computer, but when I'm reading, I need peace and quiet. My answer is here

  9. New follower here....

At first I didn't think that I multi-tasked when I read, but then when I really thought about it I guess I do. I eat and read. I also mute the commercials and read while watching TV. I drive to work and listen to a book too. So yes, I definitely multi-task and read.

  10. Me, too. I can multi-task if I have to, but I really prefer to concentrate on one thing at a time. Especially when I'm reading!

  11. I do multitask, but reading and walking at the same time is beyond me. Still, I have a book along in case I need to wait for someone for more than 30 seconds. My parents gave up on the don't read and eat thing, probably because they did it themselves...

  15. I realize that I simply take it for granted, eating and reading, as that never even occurred to me this morning when I was typing my post.

Unless it's a formal/family meal or I have guests, I pretty much can't/won't eat unless I'm either at the computer (reading), reading a book/comic, or watching tv.

Thanks for the comment on my post. I, too, am not proud to have so many unfinished books. But, that does mean they are started "projects," which means there's always something to do...and/or at least the book was given a chance. :-)

  16. I can't read and watch TV--I can't even be in the same room while the TV is on. I think I used to be able to do this, but as I got older/busier/tireder, it's harder for me to escape into my book the way I need to if I'm distracted by the TV.

  18. thanks for stopping by mine! I don't know if I could manage the walking and reading anymore (I did that over 20 years ago). I seem to be a lot less coordinated now than I was when I was younger....but I can still multi-task in all the other ways.

  19. Thanks for stopping by! LOL, yes, it takes practice to read and walk at the same time. Some days I walk into doors. (then again, I can do that without a book)

  20. Thanks for visiting my blog. Sally, I agree that audio books have disadvantages as well. I find it works better with some books than others. One might also find that one likes some voices better than others. As for the book itself, I find audio works best for novels that keep a good flow in the story. And yes I guess it takes some getting used to. For me it was partly a choice of either audio books or much less reading and then the choice was not so hard ;)
